Periodontists

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the treatment of gum diseases, gum surgery and the placement of dental implants.

Becoming a periodontist involves studying 5 years to be a dentist, working as a general dentist for at least 2 years before returning to university for a 3 year full time specialist training program.

Dr Susan Wise BDSc (Melb) MDSc (Qld) MRACDS (Perio) FPFA FICD FADI GAICD

Dr Susan Wise graduated as a dentist from the University of Melbourne in 1994. She worked as a general dentist for 5 years before moving to Brisbane in 2000. Susan studied periodontics a the University of Queensland and was awarded a Masters of Dental Science (Periodontics) in 2002. She moved to Sydney in 2003 and worked as a specialist periodontist for 2 years then returned to Melbourne in 2005 to set up her specialist periodontal practice in McKinnon.

Susan is the President of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the Co-Chair of the Australian Dental Health Foundation Victoria. She is a Past President of the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch and the Australian Society of Periodontology Victorian Branch. Susan has been a demonstrator to and examined undergraduate and postgraduate students in periodontics. Susan is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, International College of Dentistry and Academy of Dentistry International. She was awarded the Australian Dental Association Valuable Service Award in 2021 for her services to dentistry.

Dr Larissa Ong BDSc (Hons) DCD (Perio) (Melb)

Dr Larissa Ong graduated as a dentist from the University of Melbourne and worked in general practice interstate and locally. She returned to the University of Melbourne to pursue specialist postgraduate training in periodontics, gaining experience at the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne and in private practice. Larissa is a firm believer in continuing education and regularly attends courses in Australia and Internationally to further her knowledge and skills. She has served as a clinical demonstrator and examiner in the field of periodontics.

Her special interests are in soft tissue grafting and gingival (gum) recession coverage procedures, the non-surgical and surgical management of periodontal disease and dental implants.

Larissa is the President of the Australian Society of Periodontology Victorian Branch, on the educational committee for the Australian Osseointegration Society and is involved with several study clubs in Melbourne. In her spare time, Larissa loves spending time with her family and playing board games.
